2024 Artist In Residence
Nicole Duprée (She/Her)
Nature-Based Visual Art
My creative practice focuses on exploring natural materials to nurture relationships with place, community, self, and creative spirit. I have an insatiable curiosity about how things are made, where the materials come from, and whose hands created them. As much as I like exploring and experimenting, I also enjoy the documentation, which has become a big part of my work resulting in a collection of visual journals, lab notes, and a public access tv show, Indigo In Green. Knowing where my food comes from is important and it feels really good when I know the people whose hands grew the veggies that nourish and delight my family. I love when the materials for my creative practices also hold these stories of connection to people, plants, and places.
As artist in residence at Dirtbaby Farm, I created work with plant material headed for the compost: weaving with porcelain berry vines removed from the fences, making lake pigments with a pulled dock root and thinned carrot tops—then making watercolor paint and small watercolor drawings. I have also created many anthotypes (plant-based sun prints) and included a mini anthotype kit and a pocket flower press in the 2024 CSA share.
During this time, while getting to know Dirtbaby Farm, themes that emerged in conversation and work included: nourishment and care, light and the creative power of the sun, protection and vulnerability, as well as grounding and spaces of transition. So much gratitude for the time this season at Dirtbaby Farm!
